Quilts of Valor

I had to make so more stars, put some borders on.

But, I got it put together and sent it off so someone else could out a border on.

Can't wait to see it fully finished.

I have talked about it before but my grandmother has a group of friends who get together to make quilts and give them away to those that have been in wars, hence Quilts of Valor

I received a call the other day asking if I wouldn't mind taking on a project. A friend of my grandmothers had recieved a package of 12 squares but they are not big enough to put together in order to meet the minimum requirements for the Quilts of Valor project. So each square needs to have a border put on and then they must all be put together.

This is what the squares started out as.

And there is all 12 of them.

Now I have a border on 1.

I really have borders on 4 of them right now but I didn't get a picture. The worst is going to be making the 8 extra squares that I need because I need 20 squares and I only have 12. So maybe tonight I will work on getting another square made or maybe just some more borders. Depends on the mood!

projects

I have been busy finishing up some projects in my sewing room. I just love when I have time to sew!

I picked up the missing piece to the border this weekend at the sale. So I was excited to be able to get the last border put on.

I have to say see those fingers holding this quilt up. I have such a great husband who is willing to help me hold things up so that I can get pictures of them.

I finished this quilt last weekend at mom's house. I put a picture on last week but I have added the borders on since then and really like this quilt. When Autumn saw it on Halloween she decided she wanted it and she sat on and folded it around her.

I have been working on this quilt. I have not liked this quilt from the begining but I got a border for it this weekend. So I can't wait to get the border on it!

These leaves gram won at a quilt meeting. They were sitting in her closet so I took them. I had a total of 18 or 20 squares but only used 16 on the front and may add the others to the back. I got a border and a back for this this weekend also so will be working on this sometime.

I may have to put a few of my projects on the back burner for a bit since I am taking on another project.

A friend of gram's is working on a Quilts of Valor project. They have a group of women that get together and sew these quilts together. They have made and given away 6 quilts before and now they are working on making more to give away so they have asked if I would help!

Quick before the husband returns

You got it! QUICK before the husband returns.

I had some projects I wanted to get finished that I haven't had time to do with Ryan being home.

First I had to make 52 quarter square triangles. This was tough because first I had to make 26 half square triangles then sew and cut again to make the quarter square triangles.

Okay, so it took me Friday night and then I started sewing them together for the border.

I am sorry I don't have a finished project yet but I ran short on one piece of the outer border and I didn't want a partial finished picture. So I will wait till this weekend until I go to the quilt shop in order to get that one little strip 2 and a 1/2 inches wide by only a little 22" strip.

I hate when I run just that short on a border when I already have the binding cut and ready to go!

We had a girls sewing weekend also! Gram came down, Isabella came down for the night to visit, Lynda and Carol also came down.

Isabella wanted to work on a Christmas present. She had started this project the last time she was down to Gram's.

Gram found something to work on. We like keeping busy and I especially like sewing!

My cousin Heidi came out and gave us all pedicures. It was so worth it let me tell you. I may have spent an hour away from my sewing machine but I had some hand sewing to work on while I was relaxing.

Lynda was bound and determined to get some pillow cases made. She had never made any before so this was a new project for her.

Gram always has pillow cases to work on also!

Isabella finished her project for her Christmas present!

Okay so someone took my camera away from me! I was helping Lynda get fabric cut down to the right size for pillow cases.

I look like I am studying really hard!

Okay so again, I don't have my camera! Mom was working on a quilt that required her strips to be really long. Carol held the middle while I held the opposite end. She told me to twist. I started twisting my entire body. I guess she really only wanted me to twist the fabric. Oh, well I guess she needs to be a bit more specific when she talks to me!

Here's mom's finished product. I really like the looks of this quilt.

Mom began with a jelly roll and cut each strip in half then sewed them together on a straight line. (Keep this in mind for later)

Mom also got her border on this lovely quilt of squares.

I made another quilt! Here is my Jelly Roll at the beginning!

I left them all whole, separated them, and threw them in a bag! This is how I pulled them out one at a time in order to sew them together in a random order.

Then I sewed them together. This is where mom and I did differently. I sewed whole strips, and I sewed them together on a diagonal. Two different quilts using the same pattern but different techniques.

Then I decided pillow cases would also be a good activity to pass some time!

I made two opposite pillow cases. I made a quilt with these materials for a friend of mine when she graduated from high school and headed off to collage. These are not for her however, my grandmother made her matching pillow cases before she left.

I also went a little pillow case happy!

I made one with turkeys,

one with moose,

and one with deer.

I bet you can't guess who these pillow cases might be for! That's right, that mighty hunter that I have been missing so much this week will be coming home to new pillow cases for his bed. He will have pillow cases for each hunting season!

I sure hope he loves me! Not only did we have a girls sewing weekend but I even made him 3 special presents for when he returns home!
